This presentation focuses on wood, carpet and resilient flooring. The three main causes of floor failure will be discussed along with an explanation of steps to avoid failure. Testing of moisture and relative humidity for both flooring installation and the prevention of mold or other health issues are covered. Selecting the proper floor over wood and concrete subfloor preparations, including underlayments, acclimating material and proper adhesives are discussed. The presentation will advance to working in occupied buildings, hazardous materials, asbestos, chemicals, volatile organic compounds, maintenance and understanding the industry.

Course Description:
This course addresses the complex nature of performing flooring replacement work in occupied buildings to protect staff and public while maintaining the operation of the facility. Also discussed are several flooring materials and their proper installation methods as well as the responsibilities of the owner, architect, construction manager, contractors and tradesmen.

This course covers the basics of green floor covering removal, disposal and installation guidelines for flooring materials, such as carpet, vinyl composite tile, synthetic turf, linoleum, hardwood and bamboo. Renewable sources of flooring and sustainability factors with their effects on the lifecycle process will be discussed. Proper maintenance procedures for extending the life of flooring products, manufacturer’s warranties, levels of LEED certification and the importance of selecting low VOC adhesives will be addressed.

Course Description:
This course begins with a brief history of carpeting. Characteristics of various types of fibers used in carpets are explained. Carpeting installation techniques including direct glue down, tackstrip, and double glue down are discussed. The Carpet and Rug Institute Installation Standards for Residential and Commercial Carpeting are presented and the correct storage of this material is explained. Once the flooring is installed, methods and timeliness of cleaning the carpet to insure that it maintains that “new” look are reviewed.

Course Description:
This course will educate the decision makers in the construction industry what green flooring is made of. The participants will learn the unique characteristics of installing the new generation of green flooring, and how maintaining a floor has evolved with the green movement. The participants will learn how to meet their green goals. The course begins by explaining the EPA pyramid, and then we discuss how manufacturers are introducing green methods. The course then describes green floor covering including; VCT, resilient, linoleum, rubber, synthetic turf, wood, bamboo, laminate, and carpet. The course also describes how achieving LEED Indoor Environmental Quality goals may help curb employee absenteeism, increase productivity, and retention.

Synthetic Turf
1.0 LU AIA CRCCST
Course Description:
This course begins with a brief history of synthetic turf. The advantages are covered in depth, followed by manufacturing techniques and then the various interior and exterior turf applications. For exterior installations, construction and drainage are addressed including the surface / subsurface soil survey to decide on the necessary preparations for the turf base. The importance of a one-time proper installation is stressed with a discussion of the turf layout, turf breaths, sewn seams, glued seams, inlays, and proper infill techniques. Safety of workers from heat and dangerous heavy machinery is explained. Health of turf users will be addressed using industry reports noting the insignificance of lead in synthetic turf or the crumb rubber infill material. For athletic fields, evaluation for proper player impact is discussed. Interior and exterior maintenance will be presented with an emphasis on winter exterior maintenance. The presentation will end with discussing the qualities of a good contractor and the necessity of proper installation training for both today and tomorrow.
